Guard Those Grins!

As part of our comprehensive preventive care at Seedling Kids Dentistry, we offer dental sealants to shield your child’s teeth from decay. Dr. Noyan Aynechi recommends sealants for children, especially as their permanent molars come in, to provide an added layer of protection.

What are Dental Sealants?

Dental sealants are thin, protective coatings applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth (molars and premolars). These areas are particularly prone to cavities due to the grooves and pits that can trap food particles and bacteria. By sealing these grooves, we create a smooth surface that is easier to clean and less likely to harbor decay-causing bacteria.

Benefits of Dental Sealants

  1. Effective Barrier: Sealants create a smooth surface that food particles and bacteria cannot penetrate, significantly reducing the risk of cavities.

  2. Easy Application: The process of applying sealants is quick, painless, and can be completed during a regular dental visit. This makes it convenient and stress-free for both children and parents.

  3. Long-Lasting Protection: With proper care, dental sealants can last several years, providing ongoing protection against decay. Regular check-ups allow Dr. Aynechi to monitor and reapply sealants as needed.

  4. Cost-Effective: Preventing cavities with sealants can save money and avoid the need for more extensive and costly dental treatments in the future. This makes sealants a wise investment in your child’s dental health.

The Application Process

During your child’s visit, Dr. Aynechi will clean and prepare the teeth by thoroughly removing any plaque and debris. This ensures that the sealant adheres properly. The teeth are then dried, and an acidic solution is applied to the chewing surfaces to roughen them slightly, which helps the sealant bond to the tooth. After rinsing and drying the teeth again, the sealant material is painted onto the chewing surfaces. A special light is used to harden the sealant, creating a strong and durable barrier against decay.

Who Should Get Sealants?

Dental sealants are recommended for children and teens, particularly those with deep grooves in their molars. Dr. Aynechi will assess your child’s teeth and recommend sealants based on their individual risk of tooth decay. Sealants are most effective when applied to the permanent molars soon after they come in, typically around ages 6 and 12.

Maintaining Dental Sealants

While dental sealants provide excellent protection, it’s essential to maintain good oral hygiene practices. Encourage your child to brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste and floss regularly to keep their teeth and gums healthy. Regular dental visits are also crucial for monitoring the condition of the sealants and reapplying them if necessary.
